For December, aka holiday season, our curator turned her attention to celebrations — but not in the straightforward way you’d think. Instead of all Champagnes, sommelier Bianca Sanon of Miami selected a mix of still and sparkling, red and white, to remind us that different celebratory moments call for very different wines. In 2020 especially, big holiday parties were replaced by quiet nights in, which call for a more weighty red wine, or by long, lazy day-drinking sessions, for which a glou glou red is a perfect match.
In December’s box:
- Esencia Rural ‘Pampaneo Ancestral’ 2019 — a playful, crisp pét-nat made of Spain’s airen grapes that has an unexpected weight and complexity
- Cardedu ‘Caladu’ 2016 — a deep red wine made of Sardinia’s cannonau grapes, with a leathery, smoky, and brooding character
- Fond Cyprès ‘Premier Jus’ 2019 — a chillable “glou glou” wine, somewhere between a dark rosé and a light red, made of carignan and grenache
- Bolet Brut Nature Classic Cava — a textured and bone-dry sparkling wine from Spain with notes of peach, orange blossom and brioche
